Editorial Process

Manuscripts must be submitted to the journal via the OJS 3.x platform. Authors must first register on the journal's portal. Once registered, they can proceed with the manuscript submission. Authors receive an acknowledgment of receipt through the platform system, sent to the primary author’s email provided during registration.

On the journal's portal, the following comprehensive guidelines, available as downloadable files, guide the publication process:

  1. Pre-submission checklist
  2. Guidelines for external reviewers
  3. Cover letter
  4. Evaluation protocol for external reviewers
  5. Rubric for thematic editors

Within a maximum of thirty days from the receipt of each manuscript, authors will be notified whether the manuscript is initially accepted or rejected for external review. If the manuscript has formal deficiencies or its content is not pertinent to the Studies section or Central Theme, the Editorial Committee will formally or thematically reject the manuscript.

Before accepting a manuscript, the journal performs a text similarity check using Turnitin software to prevent possible plagiarism. The decision based on the similarity index is made by the journal’s editor..

If the manuscript has formal deficiencies, it will be returned to the author for correction. Once the author makes the requested adjustments, they may resubmit the manuscript using the original registration to avoid duplicate submissions. If formal requirements are not met, the manuscript will be formally rejected without an option for resubmission. No further correspondence will be maintained with authors of rejected articles.

The submission date of the manuscript will not be counted until the manuscript is correctly received, i.e., once compliance with editorial policies and the pertinence of the research topic to the journal's theme is verified. It is recommended to ensure the manuscript meets all pre-submission checklist requirements before submission.

Once manuscripts are accepted by the Editorial Committee, they undergo review by two external reviewers using a double-blind, anonymous, and confidential methodology. These reviewers are external to the publishing institution and provide objective judgments while avoiding conflicts of interest. The anonymity of authors and reviewers is maintained throughout the editorial process.

External reviewers must declare no conflict of interest with the article assigned to them and follow the "Evaluation Protocol for External Reviewers." They will prepare a rubric determining if the manuscript is:

  1. Publishable without adjustments;
  2. Publishable with adjustments; or
  3. Not publishable.

In case of discrepancies between the decisions of the external reviewers, the manuscript will be sent to a third expert reviewer, whose report will determine the final outcome on the article’s acceptance or rejection for publication.

If the reviewers’ decision is to accept the article but with adjustments, the manuscript will be returned to the author for the suggested modifications. Reviewers’ observations may include suggestions on the general content, introduction, literature review, methodology, presentation/discussion/analysis of results, or clarity in writing. The author must adhere to the suggestions made by the external reviewers, respecting the original theme. The length of the corrected version cannot exceed the limits specified in this policy.

The protocol used by the journal’s reviewers is public. The scientific evaluation period for manuscripts, following the preliminary review by the Editorial Committee, ranges between 120 and 150 days.

Manuscripts that are positively evaluated but require modifications will be returned to authors, who will have a maximum of 8 days to resubmit the article with the requested adjustments.

All authors will receive the evaluation rubrics anonymously, allowing them to make the requested adjustments or respond appropriately if they do not accept all suggestions. The anonymity, objectivity, transparency, and impartiality of the external peer review process are guaranteed throughout.

Before the final edition, accepted manuscripts will be sent to authors for final review and correction via email in Word format, to approve the final version and address any clarifications requested by the editor; the author must respond within three days. Only minimal corrections to the content of the already evaluated original manuscript are permitted.

After considering the external scientific reviews, the criteria justifying the Editorial Committee's decision on the acceptance/rejection of manuscripts are as follows:

  1. Timeliness, relevance, interest, quality, and novelty.
  2. Significance and relevance: advancement of scientific knowledge.
  3. Originality.
  4. Scientific reliability and validity: proven methodological quality and rigor.
  5. Organization (logical coherence and formal presentation).
  6. External support and public/private funding.
  7. Co-authorships and degree of internationalization of the proposal and team.
  8. Presentation: good writing.

Authors commit to promoting the issue of the journal in which their article is published across all their social and academic networks. Additionally, they agree to serve as members of the Review Board for the three years following their manuscript's publication.

Authors, reviewers, Editorial Committee members, and the academic community can access the publication electronically via the journal's official platform.

The list of signing authors must include only those who have intellectually contributed to the development of the work. Management Studies declines any responsibility for possible conflicts arising from the authorship of the published works. There are two main criteria for being recognized as an author:

Having substantially contributed to the conception and design of the research, data acquisition, or analysis and interpretation of the study;

Having drafted the manuscript or critically revised its intellectual content. Authors are ranked according to their level of responsibility and involvement in the submitted manuscript. Individuals who participated in the research but do not meet at least one of these criteria should be listed as collaborators or under acknowledgments. All authors are obligated to provide retractions or corrections of errors if detected.

PRESENTATION PROTOCOLS

Guidelines for Authors/as

Manuscript Presentation and Structure

Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through the OJS 3.x platform. Authors must register on the platform with all required information to proceed with the submission (it is recommended to review the complete checklist for preparing submissions here). If there is more than one author, only one will be the corresponding author. No author may submit or have two manuscripts under review simultaneously, with a waiting period of two consecutive issues.

The works must follow the Chicago Deusto Style Manual (author-year subsystem), be presented in Word format, written in the third person, using Times New Roman 12 font, 1.5 line spacing, fully justified, with left indentation at the beginning of each paragraph, without carriage returns between paragraphs. Only major sections (author, title, abstract, keywords, JEL code, references) are separated with a carriage return. The file must be anonymized to preserve author identification throughout the editorial process, including external peer review.

Structure

Two files must be submitted simultaneously: a) presentation and cover letter; and b) manuscript, according to the following detailed guidelines:

a) Presentation and cover letter

The cover letter must include the signatures (names and surnames) of the authors, confirming that the article is unpublished and not under consideration by other journals, is an original contribution, has not been submitted elsewhere during the evaluation and publication process, confirmation of the signatories' authorships, acceptance of formal changes to the manuscript according to the guidelines, and assignment of rights to the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, Ecuador, with all the following complete data:

  • Article Title, in Spanish on the first line, composed with the maximum number of meaningful terms possible. Acceptable up to 85 characters including spaces. The responsibility for these lies with the authors and editor; therefore, if the title does not accurately reflect the essence of the work, it may be modified.
  • Name and scientific titles, consisting of as many significant terms as possible. A maximum of 85 characters with spaces is allowed. The responsibility for the title rests with the authors and editor; if the title does not correctly reflect the work's essence, it may be modified.

Scientific names and surnames of each author in order of precedence. A maximum of three authors is allowed. If there are more than three authors, substantial justification for the team's original contribution is required, as the manuscript's complexity and length will be taken into account during its evaluation. Along with the scientific names, include professional category, academic institutional affiliation, city-state-country, email, and ORCID number. Indicate if you have a doctoral degree (include Dr. /Dra. before the name). The academic signature (name) must be standardized according to international conventions to facilitate identification in major databases.

  • Abstract in Spanish of 200/210 words, structured to describe the research objective, theory used, methodology, key results, and main conclusions.
  • 5 keywords in Spanish preferably using the UNESCO Thesaurus. New terms are accepted only in exceptional cases. Terms must be in standardized scientific Spanish and provide information different from that in the title.
  • JEL code: The author must select a classification code and include both numerical and alphabetical information from the selected code http://bit.ly/31q1irE.

    b) Manuscript

Manuscripts must strictly follow the structure outlined below, with Notes and Supports sections being optional. References are mandatory for all works.

  • Title
  • Abstract
  • Five keywords
  • A JEL code (in Spanish)
  • Introduction: Include the problem context, foundations, purpose, and justification of the study, using bibliographic citations.

Theoretical framework:: Review the most significant literature on the study object, including classic and state-of-the-art references.

Methodology: Present the methodology in detail to ensure the reader understands the research development. For quantitative research, describe the sample and sampling strategies, and reference the type of statistical analysis used. For qualitative research, indicate the research design, techniques, and tools used. If using an original methodology, explain the reasons for its use and describe its possible limitations. For literature reviews or theoretical discussions, include the appropriate text.

Presentation, analysis, and discussion of results: Highlight the most important observations, describe the material and methods used without making value judgments, and present the most relevant research results. Display results in figures and/or tables according to the journal's standards (see below). Tables or figures essential to the text should appear in a logical sequence, avoiding data redundancy. A maximum of six figures and tables is recommended; if authors need to provide more data or graphical information, DOI links generated on external platforms like Figshare can be included.

Conclusions: will summarize the findings, linking own observations with other relevant studies, highlighting contributions and limitations without repeating data already discussed in other sections. It should mention the implications of the findings and their limitations, including deductions for future research, while linking conclusions to the study's objectives, avoiding unsupported claims and conclusions not fully backed by the study's data.

Notes: They are considered exceptional and should always appear as footnotes. The numbers of the notes are placed in superscript both in the running text and at the endnote, appearing in the text before the closing period or comma. Notes that merely collect simple bibliographic citations (without commentary) are not permitted, as these should be included in the references.

Supports: Authors are encouraged to specify the funding source of the research.

References: Bibliographic citations should be listed as text references. Bibliography not cited in the text should not be included. The number of references should be sufficient and necessary to contextualize the theoretical framework (an average of 30 references is recommended overall, not per author, ensuring not to exceed a maximum of three references from the same author), the methodology used, and the research results in an international research space.

They should be listed alphabetically by the author's last name (including the second name only if the first is very common, hyphenated). Citations should be taken from original documents—preferably journals and to a lesser extent books—always indicating the initial and final pages of the work cited, except for complete works.

Due to the importance for citation indexes and impact factor calculations, correct citation of national and international authors in indexed journals, following the Chicago Deusto Style Manual, will be appreciated.

How to cite: Citations and references in the article must follow the guidelines in the Chicago Deusto Style Manual, author-year subsystem with the authors' scientific names.

    Guidelines for Writing

    Language

In all UASB-E publications, it is preferred to have written expression that does not discriminate against women or any group in society and that, at the same time, acknowledges the history, structure, and economy of the language, and the most comfortable use for readers and speakers.

Therefore, sexist or inappropriate uses from the point of view of equality will not be accepted; nor will the excessive use of inclusive duplications, the morpheme e, @ (which is not a letter) or x to compose supposedly generic words, as they contravene the standard use of the language.

    Guidelines for Citation and Reference

Estudios de la Gestión adheres to the Chicago Deusto Style Manual, specifically the author-date subsystem (SAA).

Reference citations, as a general rule, according to the Chicago Deusto Style Manual, the author cited in the text is mentioned in the discourse, and in parentheses, the year and, if it is a textual citation, the page number, preceded by a comma, are indicated. If the author is not in the discourse, they are placed in parentheses, preceding the year.

Summary guide of the Chicago Deusto Style Manual, see here.

Bibliographic citation, both in the discourse and in the references, must adhere to uniform and consistent criteria. This aspect is crucial in a scientific journal. Inconsistencies and alterations of the established standards are not accepted. Please respect the punctuation system: commas, periods, and semicolons.

The following are some recommendations related to this Manual:

  • a) Words in other languages and what is to be highlighted should be in italics.
  • b) Text should never be underlined.
  • c) The first time acronyms or abbreviations are used, they should be placed in parentheses after the full form. Example: Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
  • d) About figures and tables:

  • They should be incorporated into the text in an orderly manner, according to the order of appearance.
  • It is recommended to include tables and figures with 3D design.
  • Figures, such as photographs and images, should significantly clarify the text, and their number should not exceed six between figures and tables.
  • The information within the tables should be single-spaced, in Arial, 10 points, with an initial capital letter, and centered/justified as appropriate.
  • Each element should have a title and sequence number, centered, single-spaced, Arial, 10 points. Example:
  • Table 1

    Example of table

  • Each element should include its respective citation in Times New Roman, 9 points in the lower-left corner. Examples:
    • Textual citation: Source: ECLAC (2018, 87).

    • Paraphrase: Source: adapted from ECLAC (2018).

    • Authored by the writer: Source and own elaboration.

  • Each element should be sent separately in any standard readable format (indicate the format). They must be of print quality, presented in the text in .PNG format and separately in an editable format.
  • If they were made in a statistical program, they must be accompanied by a PDF generated directly by the program.

  • Figures should be of high quality or from royalty-free image banks.
  • The originality of their graphic presentation with professional programs will be valued: RAWGraph (https://www.rawgraphs.io/), Plotly (Plotly), ChartGo (https://bit.ly/2qoRG0k); Online Chart Tool (https://bit.ly/2zpjA0g), etc., or other programs with 3D graphics.
  • e) It is mandatory that all citations with DOI (Digital Object Identifier System) are reflected in the References (can be obtained at (https://search.crossref.org/)

    f) All journals and books that do not have a DOI should appear with their link (in their online version, if they have one, shortened).

    g) All web addresses presented must be shortened in the manuscript using https://bitly.com/, except for the DOIs which should be in the indicated format.

    h) The saturation of citations from the authors (self-citations) and from this journal should be limited.

    i) National and international journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Scopus, REDIB, Dialnet Métricas, ERIH, and FECYT are recommended.

    j) Regarding the number of citations, it will depend on the nature of the work, but it is recommended to have, on average, 30 references, of which at least 10% should be references from Scopus or WOS.

Examples of citations and bibliographic references

The reference citation is the one included in the document, the bibliographic citation is the one included at the end of the document. Below are some examples of the most common types of citations and references:

    Book

  • Reference citation (Carlino et al. 2013, 34)
  • Three authors: (Carlino, Iglesias, and Bottinelli 2013)

Two authors: (Carlino and Iglesias 2013)

In the case of a textual reference citation, the page number preceded by a comma should be included, as shown in the preceding example:

    Bibliographic citation

Carlino, Paula, Patricia Iglesia, Leandro Bottinelli, Manuela Cartolari, Irene Laxalt, and Marta Marucco. 2013. Leer y escribir para aprender en las diversas carreras y signaturas de los IFD que forman a profesores de enseñanza media. Buenos Aires: Ministerio de Educación de la Nación. http://bit.ly/33IBWqS.

When the work has four or more authors, in the reference citation only the last name of the first author is written followed by the Latin phrase "et al." In the bibliographic citation, all the authors are included, and only the name of the first cited author is inverted. In the case of books consulted on the web, the respective link is added.

    Other Notes

The final text should be reviewed with the word processor’s dictionary, as although many erroneous terms are not detected, it automatically solves some problems. To avoid the common error of marking with two spaces between words, the Word search (replace) function can be used, specifying to search for double spaces to replace with one.

Abbreviations: only universally accepted ones should be used (consult: Units Symbols and Abbreviations). When intending to shorten a term frequently used in the text, the corresponding abbreviation, in parentheses, should accompany it the first time it appears. Roman numerals should not be used in the text; for decimals, a period should be used to the right of the zero and not a comma (for the Spanish version).

Supplementary Material: when it is necessary to complement the manuscript with additional documents and visual, audiovisual, statistical materials, extensive tables, complex color graphics that, due to format and size issues, cannot be inserted in the articles, these documents will be included as extraordinary files, and once accepted, they will be published prescriptively and online by the author, using the Figshare platform (, the citation of the hosting will be included in the manuscript).
