Abstract

VIERA, Paulina; GALLEGOS, Yesenia  and  VENEGAS, Edison. Compressive and flexural strength of blocks made from cangahua, lime, clay, and straw. Novasinergia [online]. 2023, vol.6, n.1, pp.150-166.  Epub Jan 16, 2023. ISSN 2631-2654.  https://doi.org/10.37135/ns.01.11.10.

: Cangahua is a type of soil abundant in areas with volcanic influence. It is characterized by its hardness and yellowish color. This material has been used in the construction of houses in Ecuador for many years, but it has fallen into disuse due to the appearance of other clay and cement-based masonry. This research, by means of an experimental design methodology, determines the quantities to make a cangahua block, whose mechanical characteristics are in accordance with what is specified in the national and international regulations for its use in construction. These results can contribute to the use of cangahua not only in the restoration of earthen buildings, which are abundant in Ecuador but also as an alternative low-energy material for the construction of walls in new buildings.

Keywords : Blocks; Cangahua; Clay; Construction; Lime.
