Abstract

MARTINEZ, Inés del Pino. Management and art in the public space: the contribution of the "Durini" in America (1880-1930). Índex [online]. 2017, n.4, pp.13-29. ISSN 2477-9199.

The article describes and analyzes the contribution of architects Lorenzo Durini Vasalli and Francisco Durini Cáceres in the construction of a new image for urban public space and the management of monuments in Ecuador, combining their academic knowledge and vast experience. The descriptions of their commemorative monuments reveal a universal message: freedom, victory and progress. This is represented by intellectuals and heroes of Latin American independence in a historic moment at the beginning of the 20th century when symbols of the newly established republics were being created.

The quotes and some photographs come from the “Museo de la Ciudad” of Quito, where the Durini Collection is located. It consists of 1.632 registers that include personal documents, letters, telegrams, photographs, plans, architectural and construction catalogs, drawings, watercolors and drawings made with different techniques, which belonged to Lorenzo and Francisco Durini.

Keywords : Public space; Durini; italians; Ecuador; monuments; centenary of independency.
