Abstract

YEPEZ, Raúl. The frame referee: Symmetry in Peter Greenaway's films. Índex [online]. 2016, n.2, pp.42-63. ISSN 2477-9199.

Symmetry is a key element in the aesthetic conception of cinematographic framing, used by Peter Greenaway in almost all of his films. According to Arlindo Machado "All framing syncopation is an ideologically oriented operation, as it goes in or out of the field, it presupposes the intention of who enunciates and the availability of whom is enunciated." The article tries an interpretation of this resource, allied to the use of techniques implied in this action. Besides reviewing the concept of symmetry, there are also explored some definitions and meanings connected with framing and composition, from the standpoint of classical authors involved with the concept and techniques of photography and cinematography.

Keywords : Symmetry; Greenaway; cinematography; framing; composition.
