The aim of this study is to understand the contribution of metacognition in the learning of mathematics in secondary school students. For this purpose, a bibliographic review of the last 10 years was carried out with a sample of 15 articles obtained from the ProQuest and Scielo databases. The research was developed with a qualitative approach, where results were obtained in relation to metacognitive skills, metacognitive processes and learning strategies, which led to the conclusion that metacognition is fundamental in the learning of mathematics in secondary school, since it enables self-reflection of the process itself, favoring meaningful learning.
