The role of university faculty has evolved significantly over recent decades due to factors such as educational policies, technological advances, and increasing social and student expectations. Today, university instructors are expected to possess a competency profile that includes skills, knowledge, and attitudes enabling them to perform effectively in an ever-changing educational environment. This includes the use of technology and fostering the value of service to others. This article aims to identify the competencies that university faculty in dentistry should possess to ensure a well-rounded education for students and continuous improvement in teaching and learning. This literature review was conducted by searching articles between June and September 2024 using Google Scholar. A search strategy with specific keywords was applied to retrieve information, identifying competencies such as curriculum planning and design, learning assessment, effective communication, and the ability to promote research.
