In this article, an interpretive analysis of the meaning of “democracy” is carried out from its conceptualization by the ancient Greeks and in the era of Republican Rome, until reaching how democracy is perceived today. The objective was to analyze different perspectives on the concept of democracy, from its relationship with human rights to its application in today's society. The methodology used was based on an interpretive analysis of historical and contemporary sources on democracy and human rights. The results highlight the importance of democracy in respecting fundamental rights, citizen participation and democratic governance. The complexity and richness of the concept of democracy in different historical and cultural contexts is highlighted. Currently this term is related to Human Rights; It does not present an individual aspect, it varies from the perspective of each nation; Finally, it is essential to guarantee fundamental rights in order to achieve the ideal functioning of the State.
