Resumen

VILLACIS TAPIA, Enrique; OVIEDO, Anahí  y  VELASTEGUI, Johanna. Identity, Memory and Spatial Appropriation through Sound: Case Study of Seniors in La Loma Grande. Índex [online]. 2025, n.19, pp.70-79. ISSN 2477-9199.  https://doi.org/10.26807/cav.v10i19.633.

The study analyzes identity, sound medium, synesthesia and memory in seniors as a mechanism of belonging in the La Loma Grande neighborhood (Quito), based on the production of sound archives. Stories were collected that evoke missing spaces in the neighborhood, promoting a process of recovery of identity and appropriation of the environment.

Through the analysis, it was identified how sound repetition stimulates memory and facilitates the recreation of spaces through imagination. It was evidenced that sound, by activating multiple senses, stimulates cognitive well-being and reconfigures sensory and social experiences, becoming a tool of resistance to the loss of physical spaces. This study validates the importance of collective memory in the appropriation of the territory and highlights the role of the sound archive in the preservation of the already non-existent material as well as intangible heritage of communities.

Palabras clave : Identity; the elderly; sonography; sound archive; testimony; multi-senses; reminiscence.
