The artistic production of José Luis Macas is acknowledged by a site-temporal focus, emerging from the identification of poetic situations where natural, social, and cosmic phenomena, such as solstices and equinoxes, converge. His interest lies in landscapes, exploring their memory and biological, cultural, geographical, and astronomical singularities. His cyanotypes, paintings, sculptures, and video performances blend the ancestral with the contemporary, questioning notions of ruin and boundary. The reciprocity and energy of nature, represented by elements such as volcanic soils and sunlight, are central to his work. His most recent piece, No es el río lo que se mira (2023), concludes a decade of reflection on the interconnectedness of geographies, cultures, and emotions. This curatorial text was written for the exhibition It all started sunrising by the artist José Luis Macas, held in December 2023 and January 2024 at the Casa del Barrio gallery in Guayaquil.
