Resumen

Identification of broccoli bioactives and their effects on human health: A systematic review. RCTU [online]. 2025, vol.12, n.1, pp.70-77. ISSN 1390-7697.  https://doi.org/10.26423/rctu.v12i1.852.

This systematic review article analyzes the effect of bioactive compounds present in broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica) on human health, focusing on the prevention of chronic diseases. The research centers on how the main phytochemicals in broccoli, especially glucosinolates, isothiocyanates, sulforaphane, polyphenols, and flavonoids, contribute to functional health benefits. The PRISMA methodology was used to identify, select, and synthesize scientific evidence, reviewing articles published between 2014 and 2024 in databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect, Scielo, Redalyc, and PubMed. Out of a total of 150 studies found, 20 were selected that met the inclusion criteria for detailed analysis. The main findings reveal that regular consumption of broccoli can have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and hepatoprotective effects, as well as modulate phase II enzymes and cellular pathways related to oxidative stress. Sulforaphane stands out as one of the most studied compounds for its ability to induce protective cellular responses.
