RUIZ-BARRERA., Juan Manuel. The configuration of bellicose masculinities in the Colombian armed conflict. Íconos [online]. 2025, n.82, pp.185-203. ISSN 1390-8065. https://doi.org/10.17141/iconos.82.2025.6276.
The ecology of violence in Colombia is a problem that has allowed the perpetuation of the armed conflict. This ecology of violence is composed of bellicose masculinities that are interrelated with a system of war. The objective of this article is to identify how bellicose masculinities are configured in the war system that has been consolidated since the mid-20th century in Colombia. To develop the study, a qualitative methodology was used based on bibliographic review, biographical narrative, and feminist ethnography. The latter two were conducted with the reincorporated population of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia People’s Army residing in the former space for training “Antonio Nariño”, in the territory of Icononzo-Tolima. The results highlight that the ecology of violence is a scenario of legitimization of war masculinities (militarized, criminal, and guerrilla) within the patriarchal order, which are mainly stimulated in the first years of men’s lives by family and the violent environment in which they are inserted. In this sense, it is concluded that, in order to advance in the construction of peace, it is necessary to deconstruct various bellicose masculinities based on mechanisms that enable self-recognition, reflection, and the conformation of new ways of being.
