KLEIDERMACHER, Gisele. Migrations and school: Social representations of foreign students in Buenos Aires. Íconos [online]. 2025, n.82, pp.141-159. ISSN 1390-8065. https://doi.org/10.17141/iconos.82.2025.6197.
This article analyzes the links between school and migration based on the social representations constructed by management staff at the public secondary level in Buenos Aires between 2021 and 2023. We start from the following assumption: the school - as a state apparatus - plays a fundamental role in the administration of ethnic and cultural diversity. The in-depth interviews conducted with the management staff of institutions located in different neighborhoods of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires allow us to disaggregate five analytical blocks to delve into representations of migration and, in particular, of those coming from Bolivia and Venezuela, who are the most numerous. Another topic of discussion is the challenges of integration and the institutional response to situations of discrimination based on the origin of foreign students. Among the findings, it is worth mentioning that students of Venezuelan origin are perceived as being developed and with better academic performance, a representation linked to the social class and educational level of their families. By contrast, the representation of students of Bolivian origin is associated with problems of adaptation and greater academic difficulties derived from the diminished valuation of their previous educational and family trajectories.
