La sección transversal en terraplén es construida con material de relleno compactado por capas y con pendientes de ladera suavizadas para garantizar su estabilidad. En las regiones lluviosas, donde el material está en condición saturada durante muchos meses del año, y dependiendo del tipo de material, el terraplén puede sufrir deformaciones que afecten la estabilidad de la sección y su operatividad. En el diseño de estas secciones transversales, pocas veces se toman en consideración estas condiciones, ni se evalúa el efecto sobre la estructura de la vía, seguridad y confort del usuario. Esta investigación planteó someter a una sección transversal en terraplén a diferentes condiciones de drenaje y fuerzas sísmicas, para evaluar cómo varía el asentamiento por consolidación y la estabilidad. Se utilizó como herramienta el método numérico de los elementos finitos en alternativa a la Teoría de la Consolidación Unidimensional de Terzaghi. En los resultados se pudo observar que la saturación del material y la acción sísmica afectan la estabilidad e incrementan los asentamientos considerablemente. Por tanto, al diseñar las secciones transversales de una vía, deben considerarse estas condiciones, los efectos que producen y las consecuencias en la durabilidad de la obra, seguridad y comodidad del usuario.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: In the road construction process, cross sections are generated as a result of the modification of the original topography. These will respond to the geometric design of the road and will be built with earth movement either in cut or in filling. The embankment cross section is built with filling material compacted in layers and with smoothed slopes to guarantee its stability. In rainy regions where the material is in a saturated condition for many months of the year, and depending on the type of material, the embankment may suffer deformations that affect the stability of the section and its operability. In the design of these cross sections, these conditions are rarely taken into consideration, nor is the effect on road structure safety and user comfort evaluated. This research proposed subjecting an embankment cross section to different drainage conditions and seismic forces to evaluate how settlement due to consolidation and stability varies. The Finite Element numerical method was used as an alternative to the Terzaghi Onedimensional Consolidation Theory. The results showed that material saturation and seismic action affect stability and increase settlements considerably. Therefore, when designing the cross sections of a road, these conditions, the effects they produce, and the consequences on the durability of the work, safety, and user comfort must be considered.]]></p></abstract>
