Los rasgos fisiopatológicos en la enfermedad de Alzheimer se inician hasta 20 años antes, transitando por tres estadios que incluyen el envejecimiento normal, deterioro cognitivo leve y demencia. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo conocer la prevalencia de deterioro cognitivo en una muestra de adultos de mediana edad y adultos mayores del sur del Perú. Se realiza una evaluación cognitiva discriminante para la ausencia o presencia de alteración cognitiva, enfocada especialmente en memoria, lenguaje, visuo-percepción/visuo-construcción y otros dominios cognitivos. Se utilizaron el Mini Mental State Examination, el Test del Reloj y el test de Fluidez Verbal, obteniéndose datos de prevalencia para deterioro cognitivo con puntos de corte ajustados según rangos de edad (50-98 años) y años de escolaridad para adultos de ambos sexos. Se realizó estadística paramétrica y no paramétrica, regresión logística, correlación de Pearson y ANCOVA. Se seleccionaron los puntos de corte más adecuados para nuestra población a través de las curvas ROC y el índice de Youden. El porcentaje de deterioro cognitivo leve global fue de 58.80%. Es necesario generar políticas de saludes mentales más efectivas, especialmente referidas a la población de mediana edad y adulta mayor, que aborden la detección temprana de DCL y enfermedad de Alzheimer.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Appraisals of dementias worldwide envisage an unfavorable scenario, especially in developing countries. Since factors such as education, socioeconomic status and healthiness play an important role in the development of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. It is known that pathophysiological features begin up to 20 years before an Alzheimer's diagnosis and that the disease transits through three stages that include normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of cognitive impairment in a sample of middle-aged and older adults in southern Peru. A discriminant cognitive evaluation is performed for the absence or presence of cognitive alteration, focused especially on memory, language, visuoperception/visuoconstruction and other cognitive domains. Mini-Mental State Examination, Clock´s Test, and Verbal Fluency test were used, obtaining prevalence data for cognitive impairment with adjusted cut-off points according to age ranges (50-98 years) sex and education. Parametric and non-parametric statistics, logistic regression, Pearson correlation and ANCOVA were performed. The most suitable cut points for our population were selected through the ROC curves and the Youden index. The percentage of global mild cognitive deterioration was 58.80%. It is necessary to generate more effective mental health policies, especially referring to the middle-aged and elderly population, that address the early detection of MCI and Alzheimer's disease.]]></p></abstract>
