<self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2631-25812017000200243&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2631-25812017000200243&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.senescyt.gob.ec/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2631-25812017000200243&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Objetivo: Realizar un estudio descriptivo de los tumores de fosa posterior en una muestra de un hospital de referencia nacional en Ecuador  Materiales y métodos:  Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo, de corte transversal, estableciendo variables sociodemográficas y clínico-epidemiológicas de 24 expedientes clínicos de pacientes menores de 14 años que contaron con un diagnóstico de tumor de fosa posterior, ingresados en el Hospital Pediátrico Baca Ortiz entre los años 2014 y 2016.  Resultados:  Se encontró una proporción de 1:1 entre sexo masculino y femenino, con una distribución etárea de 20,8% de pacientes menores de 3 años, 33,3% entre 3 y 6 años, y 45,8% de mayores de 6 años. El diagnóstico histopatológico más frecuente fue el meduloblastoma, con 45,8%, seguido de ependimoma con 29,2% y finalmente el astrocitoma cerebeloso con 12,5%, existiendo además un 12,5% que no cuentan con histopatología. La presentación que predominó fue la hipertensión intracraneal (87,5%) seguida de otros cuadros clínicos menos frecuentes.  Conclusiones:  La evidencia científica sobre los tumores de fosa posterior en el Ecuador es escasa. Este estudio plantea la necesidad de realización de estudios similares que reflejen de mejor manera las características de esta patología de diagnóstico frecuente en pediatría.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objective:  To perform a descriptive study of posterior fossa tumors from a sample of patients from a national reference center in Ecuador.  Materials and methods:  a descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed. Socio-demographic and clinical-epidemiological variables were established for 24 patients under the age of 14, whose clinical records reported a diagnosis of posterior fossa tumor, and who were hospitalized in Baca Ortiz Pediatric Hospital between 2014 and 2016.  Results:  There was a 1:1 relationship between males and females, an age distribution of 20,8% of patients younger than 3 years, 33,3% between 3 and 6 years, and 45,8% of patients older than 6 years of age. The most frequent histopathological diagnosis was medulloblastoma with 45,8%, followed by ependymoma with 29,2%, and astrocytoma with 12,5%. 12,5% of patients did not have a biopsy performed. Intracranial hypertension was the most frequent clinical presentation syndrome with 87,5% followed by far less frequent symptoms in our sample.  Conclusions:  Scientific evidence about posterior fossa tumors is limited in Ecuador. This study states the need to perform similar and more complete studies of this frequent pediatric brain tumor.]]></p></abstract>
