La HE mide las necesidades de consumo de recursos y asimilación de residuos, mientras que la BC representa el espacio productivo disponible. En el año 2020, la ciudad de Portoviejo contaba con 246.003 habitantes, que conformaban un potencial grupo dependiente de territorios que asimilan sus residuos y producen recursos. El objetivo del estudio fue calcular los indicadores para determinar la sostenibilidad de la ciudad, aplicando el método compuesto de Wackernagel y Rees (1996), se realizó el cálculo de la huella ecológica obteniendo un valor de 0,553 hag/persona/año y una biocapacidad de 0,362 hag/persona/año, evidenciando un déficit ecológico en 2020, concluyendo que serán necesarias 47.011,17 hectáreas para satisfacer las necesidades. La determinación de estos indicadores, precisa las consecuencias que tienen los patrones de consumo, permitiendo resultados para el posterior uso y beneficio de la población y el entorno.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The Ecological Footprint (EF) and Biocapacity (BC) are key sustainability indicators, expressed in global hectares (gha). The EF measures resource consumption and waste assimilation needs, while the BC represents the available productive space. In 2020, the city of Portoviejo had 246,003 inhabitants, forming a potential dependent group of territories that assimilate their waste and produce resources. In this regard, the objective of this study was to calculate indicators that determine the sustainability of the city. Applying the composite method of Wackernagel and Rees (1996), the ecological footprint was calculated. The results obtained were 0.553 gha/person/year and a biocapacity of 0.362 gha/person/year. These values demonstrate an ecological deficit in 2020 and suggest that 47 011.17 hectares would be necessary to meet the needs. Determining these indicators specifies the consequences of consumption patterns and provides results for the subsequent use and benefit of the population and the environment.]]></p></abstract>
