En busca de sus evidencias, se realizó una perforación manual en el flanco sureste del volcán Cerro Negro, en la zona de Potrerillos, frontera Ecuador - Colombia. En el testigo de perforación se identificaron 12 capas de cenizas volcánicas con tamaño de grano medio a extremadamente fino. Se realizaron nueve dataciones radiocarbono en los sedimentos orgánicos hallados inmediatamente debajo de las principales capas que mostraron un rango de edad entre ~140-6900 años AP. El análisis de componentes de cada capa de ceniza reveló la presencia predominante de pómez y cristales libres (plagioclasa, anfíbol, ± biotita, ± piroxeno, ± cuarzo). Se identificaron dos grupos de cenizas: (1) un grupo de cenizas ácidas, probablemente provenientes del volcán Azufral (Colombia) y que corresponden a una actividad explosiva entre ~3830-6650 años AP; y (2) un grupo de cenizas de composición intermedia a ácida procedentes, probablemente, del frente volcánico ecuatoriano (Cordillera Occidental). En este último grupo se identificó una capa posiblemente relacionada a la erupción del siglo X del volcán Guagua Pichincha. Ninguna de las capas encontradas se relaciona directamente con el Complejo Volcánico Chiles - Cerro Negro, lo que sugiere una ausencia de actividad explosiva en los últimos ~6900 años AP.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Several eruptive periods have occurred in the Northern Andes during the Holocene. In order to look for these eruptive periods, a manual drilling was carried out on the southeast flank of the Cerro Negro volcano, in the Potrerillos area, Ecuador - Colombia border. In the drill core, 12 layers of medium to extremely fine grain volcanic ashes were identified. Nine radiocarbon ages were obtained from organic sediments found immediately below the major layers, showing an age range from ~ 140 to 6900 years BP. The component analysis of each ash layer revealed the predominance of pumice and free crystals (plagioclase, amphibole, ± biotite, ± pyroxene, ± quartz). Two groups of ash were identified: (1) a group of acid ashes, probably erupted from the Azufral volcano (Colombia), corresponding to an explosive activity that took placed between ~ 3830-6650 years BP; and (2) a group of intermediate to acid ashes probably related to the Ecuadorian volcanic front (Western Cordillera). In this last group, we identified a layer possibly related to the 10th century Guagua Pichincha&#8217;s eruption. Accordingly, none of the layers found seems to be directly related to the Chiles - Cerro Negro Volcanic Complex, suggesting an absence of explosive activity within the last ~ 6900 years BP.]]></p></abstract>
