Abstract

PAREDES BARRENO, Gabriela Zenaida  and  FIERRO VILLACRESES, María Soledad. Estrategias de afrontamiento y estrés en personas con discapacidad física. Rev Eug Esp [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.3, pp.37-46. ISSN 2661-6742.  https://doi.org/10.37135/ee.04.15.05.

This research aimed to describe the perceived stress and coping strategies in people with physical disabilities affiliated with the Jesús Resucitado Community Center in the town of Penipe, province of Chimborazo, Ecuador, during the period March - April 202. It was carried out a descriptive, non-experimental cross-sectional study considering its scope. The data was obtained from the psychological reports filed in the medical records of the 35 patients participating in the study. Two psychometric instruments were applied by the physician in charge: Coping Strategies Inventory and Perceived Stress Scale. The results indicated that 60% hardly ever felt stress. Social withdrawal as a coping strategy was the one with the largest proportion of the population, obtaining a very high level (57.1%); that level also prevailed in wishful thinking; in the other hand, the low level was in problem solving, very low in cognitive restructuring capacity and high level in problem avoidance. All dimensions of coping strategies were associated with the perceived stress variable.
