CAZORLA, Geovanny; SHININ ESTRADA, Emily Marcela and SOLIS CARTAS, Urbano. Efectividad de la cirugía bariátrica en el tratamiento de la obesidad. Rev Eug Esp [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.2, pp.25-34. ISSN 2661-6742. https://doi.org/10.37135/ee.04.14.04.
Obesity is a global health problem that favors the development of multiple chronic non-communicable diseases. Thus, this research aimed to determine the effectiveness of bariatric surgery as a treatment for obesity in patients operated on at the General Hospital of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) in the city of Riobamba, Chimborazo, Ecuador, during the year 2019. Non-experimental comparative research was carried out. Data were collected from the medical records of users in the investigated environment. The main results showed an average age of 43.58, a predominance of female patients (60.61%) and those ones with the presence of comorbidities (82.58%). 68.94% of the patients presented grade III obesity before surgery, the majority presented comorbidities (82.59%), among which diabetes mellitus stood out. It was concluded that patients undergoing the surgical procedure showed a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of grade II and III obesity. This evidenced the effectiveness of the treatment.
