Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects adolescents and young adults, whose main clinical manifestation is the presence of dermatological lesions. A descriptive, crosssectional study was carried out in order characterize self-medication in patients diagnosed with acne who attended an outpatient Dermatology clinic, in the General Hospital of Riobamba, during the period December 2017 and May 2018. Population was formed by 200 patients diagnosed with acne between 14 and 20 years of age. The mean age of the participants was 17,03 years, prevailing the age group from 17 to 20 years (58.50%). 119 patients (59.50%) reported administering various drug treatments to combat acne without prescrip-tion. Related to the level of education of patients in the study population, the data allowed to appreciate that among patients who self-medicated prevailed the medium expired level (77.31% of these), the case of those ones who did not predominated a basic level (43.21%), followed by those with a higher level (30.86%). The Chi-square test allowed to establish the dependence between these last two variables.
