Abstract

CRUZ CABRERA, Marianela. Quito: expression of the socio-spatial phenomenon of Latin America's urban periphery. RCUISRAEL [online]. 2019, vol.6, n.3, pp.71-84.  Epub Dec 10, 2019. ISSN 2631-2786.  https://doi.org/10.35290/rcui.v6n3.2019.116.

The socio-spatial behavior associated to the use and appropriation of the space of urban outskirts in general characterizes the areas of Latin American cities, and specifically in the city of Quito, Ecuador this phenomenon responds to accelerated urbanization processes that have developed since the second half of the 20th century. They constitute the reflection of an unsustainable urban development that must be assisted, hence this paper focuses on the social, cultural, environmental and urbanistic behavior of the urban peripheries, as a goal to improve and enhance these areas; articulate them to the rest of the city, as well as strengthening them as an integrated system of social production of the habitat. The result shows the process of expansion - peripheral dispersion, low housing densities, lack of infrastructure and service, which in most cases does not contribute favorably to the quality of life of people nor to the environment in which they live. The urban periphery as a socio-spatial phenomenon is the reflection of a transformation of space and a social stratification with very clear ways of appropriation and use. The city of the 21st century has to provide more efficient answers or choices to these sensitive areas and to the population that inhabits them.
