Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the new coronavirus 2019-nCoV that is responsible for the severe coronavirus-2 acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2), is a turning point in human history. The virus's pathogenicity and its capacity to quickly create a generalized infection with severe consequences and high mortality justify the adoption of extraordinary prevention and control measures. COVID-19 infection rates are continually evolving. It is tough to predict the disease's behavior; therefore, it is imperative to develop new drugs or reuse known drugs. Although it is a complicated process and clinical trials have profound bioethical implications, research continues to advance. The scientific sector produces quality results, including the first antiviral approved against SARS-CoV-2, Veklury®, or remdesivir. Many other therapeutic agents are under investigation, and scientists make great efforts to obtain a possible vaccine. This article provides a systematic review of (1) the pandemics throughout history, (2) the new coronavirus 2019-nCoV description, (3) transmission mechanisms, (4) diagnostic tests, (5) tested drugs (chloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, ribavirin, favipiravir, and oseltamivir), (6) immunomodulatory agents (tocilizumab, anakinra interferons, plasma transfusions), (7) coadjuvant agents (azithromycin, corticosteroids, camostat mesylate), and (8) the current situation regarding the development of a possible vaccine
