Abstract

CONGACHA, Ana E. ,; BARBA BRITO, Julio; PALACIOS PACHECO, Luís  and  DELGADO, Jorge. Characterization of traffic accidents in Ecuador. Novasinergia [online]. 2019, vol.2, n.2, pp.17-29.  Epub Dec 10, 2019. ISSN 2631-2654.  https://doi.org/10.37135/unach.001.04.02.

Thousands of lives are lost every year as a result of traffic accidents, while injuries are presented with minor and severe injuries, which in several cases determine some type of disability. The causes of traffic accidents are constantly analyzed by public and private institutions in order to take preventive actions that contribute to the reduction of rates for mortality, accident and lethality. The aim of this work is to characterize traffic accidents in Ecuador by using data analysis techniques, dynamic tables and dynamic graphs in order to identify, summarize and compare causes and factors that contribute to decision making on critical data. The data were provided by the public office, collected between 2015 and 2018, an institution with competence in 22 of the 24 provinces of the territory. As a result, there are 10 causes that would have caused 96.3% of the accidents, with the lack of attention being the predominant cause, with an incidence of 56.8% of claims. The environmental conditions, types and conditions of the road, and schedule were identified, nationally and by zones, the study concludes with the calculation of rates and rates of mortality, lethality, accident rate and motorization. The knowledge extracted is presented in detail in order to support the planning processes and the implementation of prevention policies by public institutions.
