Resumen

ARELLANO, Alfonso; BAYAS, Andrés; MENESES, Antonio  y  CASTILLO, Tito. Drinking water consumption and endowment in Ecuadorian towns with less than 150 000 inhabitants. Novasinergia [online]. 2018, vol.1, n.1, pp.23-32.  Epub 01-Jun-2021. ISSN 2631-2654.  https://doi.org/10.37135/unach.ns.001.01.03.

The demographic, economic, social, and technological development has changed the drinking water consumption of the population. The Ecuadorian norm CPE INEN 005-9-1 for drinking water systems studies has established an endowment, which has not got important changes the last 40 years. The purpose of the research is to measure the actual water consumption in 11 towns lower than 150 000 people. These towns are placed in different Ecuadorian regions. The 11 town`s water consumption will be compared with the norm endowment. The residential monthly consumption was registered during 6 months between the years 2013 and 2015. The consumption rates were measured according to the social-economical strata identified previously. Three climatological parameters were registered monthly on each town. There was found a relation between them and the water consumption rates. A statistical assessment established a relation between water consumption rates and the population size. Statistically significance differences were also found between water consumption rates and norms endowment in the population range considered by the norm. A polynomial model was developed to characterize the water consumption rates depending on the population size. The results from the model point out differences between consumption rates and endowment values on each town social strata as well as drinking water consumption rate variation in the population size. The information found will be useful for engineers during endowment calculations. This information will also be useful to establish different water consumption, prices according to consumers’ social strata.
