Abstract

OTERO, Patricia et al. Simulation of Grounding Grids Using the Three Dimensional Finite Element Method. Revista Técnica energía [online]. 2021, vol.17, n.2, pp.113-123. ISSN 2602-8492.  https://doi.org/10.37116/revistaenergia.v17.n2.2021.437.

This paper presents the simulation of grounding systems using the finite element method FEM. The simulation is carried out with different geometric scenarios, material resistivity, current values, and places through which the current will enter the grounding grid. The FEM method is used in three dimensions using ANSYS as the simulation software.

To validate the simulation, a real scale prototype of an earthing mesh in an electrolytic tank is used. Both the simulation and the real model are subjected to the same conditions.

Then 16 study cases are simulated to compare the voltage profiles simulated. All these results allow to analyze and discuss the qualities of the geometric configuration of the grid in different scenarios. The objective of this project is to generate applicable knowledge for the design of a grounding system and to evaluate results such as step voltage, touch voltage, and GPR or maximum potential rise.
