Abstract

This qualitative research deals with the meaning of the play and the role(s) played in this context by nursery school teachers of children under three years of age in the Municipality of Chillán, Chile, working in the 1st and 2nd levels of kindergarten education. A non-probabilistic sampling of homogeneous subgroups was conducted using direct non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. It was analyzed with the Atlas-TI 8 software and the corresponding content analysis. The results show the exercise of different roles in a play. Although the educators understand play as a natural instance of learning, they use it as an inductive mechanism of specific knowledge required in the Chilean curricular architecture, applying interventions with a high adult occupation of play to the detriment of the leading role and autonomic formation in boys and girls, without differentiating between play and mediated ludic activity.
