Abstract

RUBIO, Dionisio Sánchez. Sheila Levrant de Bretteville and the influence of feminism in graphic design. Ñawi [online]. 2017, vol.1, n.2, 100. ISSN 2588-0934.  https://doi.org/10.37785/nw.v1n2.a4.

Genre studies have made a great contribution to the consolidation of design as a discipline. The history of design, and in particular graphic design, has not taken into account the contributions of many female designers who have found in feminism a way of conciliating ideology and profession. Sheila Levrant de Bretteville’s professional work and teaching has been crucial in making women visible within the discipline. From the founding of The Woman’s Building together with Arlene Raven and Judy Chicago, to the management of the Graphic Design Department at Yale University, Sheila Levrant de Bretteville has promoted feminist design, which encourages equality and respect in all aspects of life.

Keywords : feminism; graphic design; gender; postmodernism..
