Abstract

PEREZ, Alexander. TORNADOES IN CUBA DURING 1991-2020. SOCIAL IMPACT IN CRUCES AND HAVANA CITY. Revista Chakiñan [online]. 2022, n.18, pp.174-190. ISSN 2550-6722.  https://doi.org/10.37135/chk.002.18.12.

In the project, the relationship between the increases or not of the reports of tornadoes in Cuba and the advance of cellular technology in the country is determined, as well as the impact of these phenomena, through two cases of studies that occurred in Cruces and Havana. The trend of tornadoes in Cuba during the period 1991-2020 was analyzed, broken down by years, months and provinces of occurrence, with a descriptive design. The trend of tornado formation has been declining; however, the last decade (2010-2020) showed an increase in reports of this phenomenon. A clear seasonal variation was evidenced in the period studied and 82% of the total reports occurred in the May-July trimester. Although there is currently a slight increase in the level of social awareness, the study shows that must be raised the level of knowledge, preparation and perception of risks in citizens. The results of this project are very useful for synoptic meteorologist and climatologists, since the trend and anomalies shown by tornadoes in Cuba, contribute to the study or climate variability and short-term forecasts, as well as a greater resilience to these phenomena.
