Abstract
APOLO, Andrea; TUSA, Fernanda and ROMAN, María. FAKE NEWS AND DISINFORMATION INCREASE DURING THE 2020 STATE OF EXCEPTION: EL MERCIOCO CASE, ECUADOR. Revista Chakiñan [online]. 2022, n.16, pp.35-51. ISSN 2550-6722. https://doi.org/10.37135/chk.002.16.02.
The present study analyzes how the media ecosystem favors the creation and proliferation of fake news, taking into account a case study from a fanpage called 'El Mercioco' during the 2020 state of exception in Ecuador. The applied methodology responds to a qualitative approach through interviews with experts on the subject and content analysis where the number of followers of the fanpage, the number of publications between March and June 2020 were taken into consideration, along with the type of fake news spread by the platform and the reactions of the audience shown by the number of likes, the number of times the post was shared and the comments from the public. As a result, it was possible to determine that the topics more likely to be the focus of false news are those of a political and health nature, since during the period of analysis of the studied page, the health crisis due to COVID-19 emerged as well as cases of corruption related to medical supplies in public hospitals around the country.
