This essay is a reflection about parenting practices carried out by families in the 21st century. From birth, the child is received in a symbolic and cultural family tradition that provides a set of behavioral guidelines to be developed in his or her everyday life. Each society, with its traditions and norms, codifies ways of being, living and living together. The decay of a patriarchal society and the development of a consumer society and such, generated changes in family configurations and in bonding modalities. Nowadays, the values transmitted are freedom, immediate pleasure and the constant pursuit of happiness. Parents fear being authoritarian and confuse the meaning of raising with freedom in order not to frustrate their children. Freedom is a value that is internalized within an ethical framework of co-responsibility, which implies putting certain limits on human behavior. From the area of social psychology from the Institute of Social and Project Sciences at UADE (Argentina) the objective arises from the need to understand whether the difficulty that parents show to set limits to their children is due to the influence of new paradigms related to the consumer society.
