The access to the use of chemical indicators in the teaching of acid-base theory causes limitations in the learning of chemistry. Because of this, the present study was carried out with the objective of extracting anthocyanins from purple corn and its use as a chemical indicator for the qualitative identification of the acidic, neutral and / or basic characteristic of various substances in everyday life. It is a basic research, with an explanatory level and quantitative approach, based on the positivist paradigm; The research design is experimental with post- test, the method applied to obtain the indicator was the heuristic. The chemical indicator obtained was used in experimental activities with students of Bachillerato in two educational institutions: “11 de Noviembre” and “Combatientes de Tapi” along with the second semester students from the Experimental Sciences: Chemistry and Biology at “Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo”; educational institutions located in Riobamba-Ecuador. The technique for data collection was the observation through qaregistration form. The results obtained showed that the purple corn extract constitutes an optimal indicator, which during the learning process allowed the identification of the acidic, neutral and basic character of the substances in a macroscopic way based on the color change according to pH values ​.
