The objective of this research was to analyze criteria for evaluating the efficiency of R&D projects in public universities; considering that continuous assessment is a fundamental element for the improvement and success of projects. A descriptive study with a qualitative approach was carried out. Documentary content analysis was applied as a research method; which is based on a detailed bibliographic review of academic articles related to the evaluation of efficiency in R&D projects, so that criteria applicable to the context of Ecuadorian public universities could be identified. The existence of various alternatives for the evaluation of this type of projects was demonstrated. Finally, it is proposed to use as criteria for the evaluation of efficiency the indicators of: time, budget and scope, together with the satisfaction of the interested parties.
