Abstract

TORRES CANDELEJO, Jony Michel. Pride and nostalgia: the traditional marriage celebration of the Chachi people, Esmeraldas-Ecuador. ReHuSo [online]. 2022, vol.7, n.2, pp.103-118.  Epub Aug 01, 2022. ISSN 2550-6587.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6529618.

This work establishes an ethnographic analysis around the celebration of the traditional marriage of the Chachi people in modern times. This marks a break between the old and the new with respect to the meanings that the Chachi ethnic group gives to traditional marriage to give way to new ways of understanding marriage that include new processes of reinterpretation of ethnicity and senses of belonging to the community. The approach starts from an anthropological and historical conceptual analysis, from the testimonies obtained, and works with first-hand sources to understand the processes of affirmation of the chachi identity through the celebration of traditional marriage. Once the research process was completed, it was possible to determine that the celebration of traditional marriage does reinforce the identity and sense of ethnic belonging of the Chachi people that inhabit the northern area of the province of Esmeraldas.
