Resumen

GALVEZ SANCHEZ, Susan Mercedes. State of the art of painting in the Imbabura province from the end of colony to the beginning of 20th century: the case of San Antonio de Ibarra. ReHuSo [online]. 2020, vol.5, n.1, pp.46-64.  Epub 02-Abr-2020. ISSN 2550-6587.  https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6795974.

During the colonial period is given a considerable development of art in the territory of the Royal Audience of Quito, mainly linked to the production of religious images. The epicenter of this production was centered in Quito, however, since the end of the 19th this artistic tradition is transferred to the Imbabura province (Ecuador), especially to the San Antonio de Ibarra town, giving way to a period of flourishing of the art. This article is divided into two sections. The first section refers to state of the art in the Imbabura province from 1836 until 1884, where it attempts to determine whether there was artistic production or not before this period of boom production. The cities of Ibarra and Otavalo, the main economic and administrative centers of the province since colonial times, are taken as a reference. The second section examines this stage of the flourishing of art in San Antonio, focused primarily on the painting art that goes from 1884 until the beginning of the 20th century. This research relies primarily on primary sources: occupational censuses, baptismal certificates, record books, inventory of assets; in addition to some secondary sources that provide partial data that help reconstruct some aspects of the past.
