Abstract

Academic dropout was a problem affecting education, the student, society and the country’s development. It is considered in this study that the Ecuadorian educational system must guarantee the minimum conditions for those attending an educational unit to continue studying. This condition implies that teachers are familiar with the social, family and personal characteristics of the students they attend. To this end, this research investigates the reasons that led to children and adolescents who deserted their studies from the Vicente Rocafuerte Fiscal Educational Unit of the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. It also emphasizes the need for the curriculum to enable a learning process that is connected to the lives of students and organized around their vital interests, experiences and aspirations, with relevance and meaning to them. It is therefore pertinent that the curriculum proposals do not overlook who the students are, what they know, what interests them, what the community in which they live, what they do, what their life is like, their culture. In this way, this article gives an overview of the main causes and consequences of this phenomenon and gives an account of some alternatives to eradicate it.
