The following paper aims to analyze the performance criteria skills to improve the comprehensive reading in students of sixth year of basic education of the Unit “Costa Azul” of the city of Manta, Ecuador, in the 2018-2019 academic period, thus allowing to establish an emphasis of education as a fundamental axis for linguistic education. Reading comprehension must be understood as an intricate practice that demands distinctive learning and teaching, both within the framework of conceptual content and in the unique textual types of each discipline. It is based on the fact that it is not enough to use a good vocabulary to understand a text, but it is necessary to know the typologies of the specialty texts. In this sense, reading is an indispensable requirement for learning, a tool of transcendental importance for acquiring knowledge, gaining access to culture and participating in it. Hence its importance and the fact that this topic is addressed in the present text.
