Abstract

This study was developed in Manabi, Ecuador. It consisted of researching on reading, but applying it to the context of reading texts or publications issued locally. To achieve this goal, the authors elaborated a survey which was distributed in 18 out of 23 cantons in the province of Manabi. A total of 1,290 surveys served as evidence to demonstrate the current rate of reading of local texts, i.e. Manabitan publications, and to determine if these kind of written productions are worth in the local population. This investigation lasted 13 months, and during this period of time, the reading tendency of the local population towards local texts was analyzed. In addition, scientific material was searched regarding to reading comprehension, texts, national and international levels of reading, and the possible causes to undervalue books. These referential concepts were the nexus to complement this work and draw on potential conclusions in this investigation.
