The present study aims to analyze the role played by the social worker in family mediation in the people affected by the earthquake that occurred on April 16, 2016 in Ecuador. For this study, the interview method was applied to three families in the City of Portoviejo to know both the vulnerability situation in which they were and the help they received from the social worker. Likewise, in the exhibition of ideas, the method of documentary analysis was used to revise updated literature and in the location of referents, the historical-logical method. Moreover, in the exposition of the ideas that make up the theory on mediation, the technique of documentary analysis was used to review updated literature and in the location of the referring ones the historical-logical method. Among the most significant results, the role of the social worker is relevant into family mediation in the people affected by the earthquake, training them with knowledge, skills and social skills using techniques according to the situation. As a conclusion, it is stated that social work and mediation are in perfect harmony, both are based on the principle of recognition of people as beings capable of managing their emotions properly and resolve their own conflicts.
