The study of the family agriculture sector holds strategic importance in the development agenda, as it is one of the main sources of employment, a driver of economic development, and an activity whose growth significantly impacts poverty reduction and hunger eradication. Within agricultural activities, subsistence family farming stands out, characterized by a group of peasants and families who produce for their own consumption and small surpluses that they sell for reproduction. However, a large percentage of them face multiple problems that keep them in a state of multidimensional poverty. The purpose of this research was to identify the main constraints faced by subsistence family farming in the rural parishes of the Portoviejo canton, Manabí, Ecuador. A documentary and field research with a mixed approach was conducted, surveying 2,280 households from different communities, which allowed for the identification of the main social and economic impacts. It was found that 9 out of 10 households have multidimensional problems, including the sustainability of associativity, which must be resolved through duly agreed-upon public policies to improve their conditions and the degree of poverty in which they find themselves.
