The issues related to financial culture in the population have been reluctant in recent decades with great socioeconomic importance, which is why the population of the Portoviejo canton should be educated and educated, taking into account three dimensions: Financial services, financial control and savings, and in this way, they can be protected against risks and crises, in addition to promoting the culture of savings. Therefore, the objective of the theme was to empirically evaluate the culture and financial skills of the population of Portoviejo, with respect to the management of money that generates savings in families. Carrying out a quantitative investigation of a descriptive nature and non-experimental design, based on primary information from surveys of inhabitants between 15 and 65 years of the economically active population of the canton. The study participants were 383 people who answered the questions according to a questionnaire with a Likert scale, which generated a total Cronbach's Alpha of 0.928, where the main conclusion of the article is that there is still little financial culture, as well as few skills and practices. in the management of money by both urban and rural populations.
