Abstract

BARRENO CEDENO, Rafael; TRAMPUZ, Juan Pablo  and  VELEZ ALAVA, Nancy. Incidental News Consumption by College Students during the pandemic. Revista San Gregorio [online]. 2022, vol.1, n.51, pp.49-61. ISSN 2528-7907.  https://doi.org/10.36097/rsan.v0i51.2119.

Incidental consumption of news is accidentally finding information of an informative nature according to browsing habits, this being an increasingly common practice, mainly among young people. The objective of this research work is to analyze the news consumption on the Internet in the students of the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí, during the Covid-19 pandemic. For this, the bibliographic and analytical method was used, through the application of an online survey to 378 students of the Uleam of the city of Manta, during the months of August and September 2021. With the results collected, it was possible to determine that most of the respondents carry out an incidental consumption of news, a practice that they carry out with low levels of participation. Additionally, the media become the main source to contrast information when users have doubts about its veracity, so it is concluded that it is essential to maintain quality criteria in journalistic companies to effectively assume this role.

Keywords : news consumption; incidental consumption; university students; communication media; digital platforms.
