Resumen

ALFONSO LAINEZ, Gabriela Maribel  y  ZUMBADO FERNANDEZ, Héctor Manuel. Biosafety measures implemented by clinical laboratory staff in patient care. Hospital del Niño Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante. Revista San Gregorio [online]. 2022, vol.1, n.50, pp.86-99. ISSN 2528-7907.  https://doi.org/10.36097/rsan.v0i50.2065.

This study aimed to examine the biosafety measures adopted by clinical laboratory staff providing patient care at the Hospital del Niño Dr Francisco de Icaza Bustamante. An observational study was conducted, along with a cross-sectional and prospective investigation. We utilized an observation guide to document the protective barriers used by clinical laboratory personnel, the hospital waste management program, and the actions of study participants. The observation took place over eight weeks, during which all participants (29 individuals) were evaluated for at least four days according to a nominal three-category scale (always, sometimes, never). Along with the questionnaire, we gathered information on active immunization status and frequency of their professional training. Results showed that staff make correct use of face masks in their daily work; alternatively, findings unveiled deficient hand hygiene practices, as well as non-compliance in the use of surgical gowns, gloves and face shields. Poor training and limited access to personal protective equipment by the institution seem to be the most important conditioning factors. Finally, findings indicated adequate management of hospital waste.
