The academic staff is well known as key factor to universities, thus the need to raise the quality of their performance in order to improve their role and achieve the expected results. The aim of this paper is to appraising the social and educational relevance of their performance through a critical evaluation and assessment of the theoretical contributions and findings obtained from a group of studies and research works developed by selected authors. The paper identifies three ideas which document and ratify the principle: universities as strategic organizations for sustainable development; academic staff as key actors of educational and social change, efficient performance and as critical element for the improvement of institutional quality and substantial processes. To sum up, universities need to count with better professors and researchers on day by day basis, who are committed to their institutional objectives. Thus, it is crucial that efforts be aimed at their performance through actions which are compatible with the relevant institutional strategy.
