Abstract

DEL VALLE SOLORZANO, Karen Sofía. The work overload of the nursing staff that influences patient care. Revista San Gregorio [online]. 2021, vol.1, n.47, pp.165-179. ISSN 2528-7907.  https://doi.org/10.36097/rsan.v1i47.1966.

The work overload in nursing professionals has been identified as a factor of interest to be reviewed in the health and safety of the professional, and in the impact that it can generate on the care and safety of the patient. For this reason, the objective of this work is to determine the relationship between work overload and the quality of care of the nursing professional, from the perspective of the number of patients treated in the Neonatology Service, through a descriptive study, cross-sectional, where the NASA TLX instrument and two INSHT questionnaires were used, which allowed the identification of working conditions. The results show that the main source of work overload is mediated by time pressure and insufficient personnel during rotating shifts, followed by the effort that professionals must make to be able to fulfill the assigned tasks and provide quality care to the newborn. It is concluded that, although the number of patients does not determine a source of overload, their complexity and the level of the situation generate an important factor in the presence of stress and fatigue in the nursing professional.
