Sleep deprivation can affect the immune system, which in turn leads to more complicated health problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and depression; Similarly, several studies have shown that lack of sleep inhibits cognitive processes, generating low yields. Cognitive ability is essential in all daily activities; however, it is transcendental in health care. Doctors and health personnel are part of the population most vulnerable to suffering problems related to their deterioration, mainly due to the long hours they stay awake, the 24-hour shifts and their recurrence, becoming the main threat. for job exhaustion, also known as burnout syndrome.

The objective of this article is to identify and synthesize the effects and change in the cognitive skills of the resident doctor. A systematic exploratory review of 32 studies of doctors and their working hours was carried out, which prevents them from completing the recommended hours of sleep. by the World Health Organization. From the results obtained, it is highlighted that shift work, where sleep deprivation exists, alters the resident's skills, mainly at the end of their day.
