Abstract

DIAZ PEREZ, Carlos Alberto; MARTINEZ RODRIGUEZ, Milagros; VALDES DOMECH, Hidelisa  and  DIAZ MARTINEZ, Milagros del Carmen. Characterization of impacted mandibular third molars. Portoviejo 2017 -2019.. Revista San Gregorio [online]. 2020, n.39, pp.42-58. ISSN 2528-7907.  https://doi.org/10.36097/rsan.v1i39.1361.

This research aimed to characterize the impacted mandibular third molars of the patients attended in a private consultation in the city of Portoviejo in the period of 2017-2019. A descriptive crosssectional study was carried out that included the variables: age, sex, reference criteria for surgical removal, radiographic classification of Winter, and of Gregory and Pell; and the modified criteria of the Parant scale to measure operational difficulty. The universe was 134 patients, 62% were female, and 70.2% were between 20 and 30 years old. Surgical extraction of 228 molars was performed, pericoronaritis (41.0%) was the main reference criterion for extraction, panoramic radiography showed that mesioangular angulation (46.15%), and inclusion depth, position B (69.35%), were the most frequent; 52.2% of the surgeries had medium operative difficulty. The clinical-radiological characterization of the impacted mandibular third molars corresponds to international studies, although it was observed that the prophylactic indication for surgical extraction in people under 20 years of age was low, which indicates the need for a change in the criteria regarding the indications and time of extraction.
