Abstract

RAMIREZ PLASCENCIA, David. PLATO AND THE DIGITAL DEMOCRATIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE: A CRITIQUE ON THE MOOCS AS AN EDUCATIONAL STRATEGY. Revista San Gregorio [online]. 2018, vol.1, n.22, pp.116-125. ISSN 2528-7907.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between information and knowledge, particularly the actual role of the MOOCs (Massive and Open Online Courses) as instruments to promote the democratization of knowledge in Latin America. About its possible benefits, but above all the risks of applying this model without paying attention to the particular contexts in each country. The methodology focuses on the case study, through academic literature analysis and review of various platforms offered by MOOCs, particularly in the reflection of arguments for and against the design of this type of course. For this purpose, some arguments of the philosopher Plato, especially of his Phaedrus dialogue, will be used. The final results will show that although MOOCs, as an educational model, look to promote the democratization of knowledge, under this scheme there is also a dynamic that fosters a new form of cognitive exploitation of a capitalist nature.

Keywords : Cognitive capitalism; democratization of knowledge; digital inclusion; MOOC; Plato.
