The institutional evaluation for accreditation purposes in Higher Education Institutions (IES) worldwide is the most recognized strategy for quality management in the university environment. We proceed to characterize the current status of the university accreditation, identifying in the selected bibliography the general consensus, as well as the particularities of its development in the EEU and Europe. In order to fulfill the proposed objective, a systematic review of bibliographic sources obtained from a Google Scholar search and SciELO was carried out based on keywords defined by the authors that covered the period 2000-2017. The content analysis of the selected documents allowed to identify the main conceptions and foundations of the university evaluation and accreditation in general, as well as their particularities in the United States of America (USA) and in Europe. The bibliographic sources obtained were analyzed and evaluated based on the authors’ expertise. The study made it possible to assess the various existing conceptions and methodologies on this subject and to characterize the general aspects related to institutional evaluation and accreditation, as well as their directionality in relation to the quality management of university processes at present, as well as the particularities in this regard and in relation to its implementation and structure in the US and Europe.
