Old age causes changes in the state of oral health of individuals, which is manifested in periodontal diseases, which cause dental losses. The consequences are difficulties in chewing, changes in eating habits and effects on communication and personal self-esteem. This project called Sonrisas de Oro (Gold Smiles), resulting from an interinstitutional alliance (USGP and MIESS, with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Portoviejo Solidario), was the first dental intervention in the region to evaluate the oral health status of older adults. The main objective was the diagnosis of the oral health of the elderly with the assistance of students of the Odontology career of the USGP, gathering information on the behavior of oral health in older adults as an academic research, reinforcing the institutional commitment of our University with the environment. Thus, 54 patients assigned to the Guillermina Loor de Moreno Gerontology Center in Portoviejo were fully rehabilitated, discussing the effects of this intervention on the elevation of the beneficiaries’ self-esteem.
