Abstract

HARARI, Ianina. Labor policy and labor unrest in Argentina during the Covid-19 pandemic. E&c [online]. 2021, vol.2, n.13, pp.39-64. ISSN 2477-9245.  https://doi.org/10.37228/estado_comunes.v2.n13.2021.225.

This article analyzes labour measures, conflict situations, and workers’ demands that resulted from COVID related quarantine restrictions in Argentina. The measures included exempted activities, regulation of teleworking and temporary work, dismissals, suspensions and policies intended for those who were unemployed or could not resume work. With this aim, this article reviewed articles from national newspapers, content from provincial news websites, union and political web portals, and regulations issued by the Argentine Ministry of Labor. This article concludes that measures that aimed to prevent the increase in unemployment did not stop layoffs nor suspensions. On the contrary, a reduction in the nominal salary took place and real salary numbers dropped due to the postponement of key negotiations.

Keywords : labor policy; labor legislation; conflict; pandemic; Argentina.
